I had the good fortune to open the C:Windows folder on my old XP machine and was immediately surprised by the many folders that started with “$NtUninstall”. Their size varied from severalten kilobytes to ten megabytes, and over 155 of these bad guys were taking up space on my hard drive. There were also many multi-megabyte files whose names began with “$MSI31Uninstall” or “$NtServicePackUninstall”. Some of these files are from when I received this machine in 2003.
If Explorer does not show the contents of the C:Windows folder, click Tools > Folder Options > View, in the Advanced Options window select Show hidden images and folders and click OK.

These uninstall folders are designed to reboot the respective system in the event that a Windows fix fails. Obviously, the OS updates they point to have not caused any harm to the computer in question, but only work optimally. A 30 GB PC hard drive has 5 GB of free space, which is slightly less than the 20-digit range recommended by many experts to keep the drive running smoothly. It would be good for my system to clear up these useless fixes. Just in case, I’ve saved a few folders to delete that are less than a month or two old.
